Imphal, April 07 2014: The 70th Anniversary commemoration of Battle of Kanglatongbi (World War II) was organised jointly by Manipur Tourism Forum and World War II Imphal Campaign Foundation under the aegis of Red Shield Division at Kangla Tongbi War Memorial today.

Lt Gen Gautam Moorthy, AVSM, VSM, ADC, DGOS & Sr Col Comdt Army Ordnance Corps paid floral tributes to the martyrs at the Kangla Tongbi War Memorial, informed a PRO (Defence) release.

The impressive function was also attended by Maj Gen P M Bali, VSM, GOC, Red Shield Division, Maj Gen Giri Raj Singh, MGAOC HQ Eastern Command and Officers of Red Shield Division.

Standing tall in Khengjang village of Kangla Tongbi area, Sadar Hills under Senapati district, the Kangla Tongbi War Memorial is a mute testimony to the fighting prowess of the Army Ordnance Corps, a logistics organization.

During the second World War (1942-1945) when the marauding Japanese forces were trying to open their line of communication to Kohima, a small but determined detachment of the 221 Advance Ordnance Depot put a stiff resistance stalling the advance of Japanese forces till reinforcement arrived and turned the tide against the Japanese.

To commemorate the exemplary courage, bravery, unflinching devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice made by the Ordnance personnel of 221 Advance Ordnance Depot, a memorial was raised in Kangla Tongbi village, the PRO (Defence) release added.
